« In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful,
As salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatu Llahi wa barakatuh,
The pious woman of whom we are going to talk to you is one endowed with great intelligence and an unwavering sense of what is right and wrong; she was chaste and pure, preserved by God since her infancy and guided to be the mother of the believers. Upon the death of her father, she became one of the richest traders of Mecca. The Quraysh referred to her as the « pure one ».
Brother in Islam, as you have probably guessed, this is the first wife of the Seal of the Prophets Muhammad -peace and blessings be upon him – Khadîdjah Bint Khuwaylid – may Allah be pleased with her. « The best woman (in her time) was Maryam, daughter of `Imran, and the best woman (of the Prophet’s time) is Khadijah (his wife), daughter of Khuwaylid.) » (Al Bukhary)
The Prophet was hired by this noble woman to direct the caravans in the Arabian Peninsula because she had heard of his integrity and seriousness. Muhammad then agreed to marry her. They then lived in mutual respect and affection for fifteen years before Allah honoured the universe with the Revelation.
Until his fortieth birthday, Muhammad -peace and blessings be upon him- used to retire to the cave of Hira where he meditated deeply upon the universe, far from the atmosphere of idolatry of Mecca. His noble wife, Khadijah, encouraged this isolation and assured him full support.
When the Revelation came down to the Prophet, and he was troubled to the point of doubt (not about Allah but himself), it is to her that he turned in order to find comfort and trust. She was the first to believe in his message: Khadijah was the first Muslim in history. Khadijah was the first to purify herself, to kneel and prostrate herself before Allah, Master of the Universe.
Khadijah was gifted with great insight, strength, sincerity and determination; she reassured the noble Prophet: « Do not be afraid. Surely, Allah will not humiliate you. You carry out the obligations of kinship, you are truthful, you relieve people’s burdens, you possess high moral qualities which have become rare, you honour your guests and you help the distressed. » What a perfection in the judgment of Khadijah! She summed up the prospects of the mission of the Messenger of Allah in one sentence. Her adherence to the dogma of Islam was not simply motivated by blindly following her husband but by the understanding and the belief that the message that directs the defense of Truth and Justice, righteousness and rectitude, was in line within the path of pure worship, the path of our master Ibrahim – peace be upon him.
Khadijah was the best woman of her time, she brought moral and material support to her husband, when his people were denying and abusing him . When the pagans had accentuated their persecutions against Muslims, they migrated to Abyssinia; Khadîjah left her trade, her stable life and family, and experienced with them heat, thirst and hunger. She showed great patience and an admirable firmness in her faith and in the hope of reward from Allah in this trial. She was sixty years old. She spent all her money in favour of the besieged in the ravines. Disease eventually exhausted her body and confined her to bed.
She gave up her soul to the Creator in the 10th year of the prophecy, the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – felt a great sadness and called this year « the year of sorrow ».
But, the memory of her has remained etched in Muhammad’s heart forever -peace ans blessings be upon him. « She accepted me when people rejected me, she believed in me when people doubted me, she shared her wealth with me when people deprived me, and Allah granted me children only through her. »
Thus was Khadijah, who lived twenty-five years with the Prophet; Khadijah for whom the angel Jibril told the good news of: « A house in the Garden made from a hollow pearl in which there will never be any shouting or tiredness. »
We ask Allah He helps our sisters in following the example of the Mothers of the Believers, those to whom Allah said: « O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women ». (33:32)
